Battery Bill supplies and fits automotive, AGM, EFB, commercial, motorcycle and deep-cycle batteries across New Zealand, with mobile battery replacement available throughout Auckland.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions we get about choosing the right battery, battery testing, installation, stop-start systems, BMS resets and warranty.
Choosing the Right Battery
How do I know what battery my car needs?
The correct battery depends on the vehicle make, model, year, engine and the type of charging system fitted to the vehicle.
Many modern vehicles require a specific battery technology such as AGM or EFB, so it is important not to choose a battery based on physical size alone.
You can use our Find My Battery registration lookup to identify the recommended battery for your vehicle, or contact Battery Bill and we can help confirm the correct option.
What is the difference between AGM, EFB and standard car batteries?
AGM, EFB and conventional flooded batteries are designed for different types of vehicle use.
AGM batteries are designed for high electrical demand and advanced stop-start systems. They generally offer better cycling performance and higher charge acceptance.
EFB batteries are commonly used in entry-level stop-start vehicles and offer improved cycling performance compared with standard flooded batteries.
Standard calcium or flooded batteries are commonly used in vehicles without stop-start systems.
A vehicle originally fitted with AGM or EFB should generally be replaced with the correct equivalent technology.
Can I replace a normal battery with an AGM battery?
In some vehicles, yes.
An AGM battery can offer improved cycling performance and charge acceptance, but the vehicle charging system, battery location and intended use should still be considered before changing battery type.
Where possible, Battery Bill recommends following the battery specification intended for the vehicle.
If you are unsure, contact us and we can check the correct application.
Can I replace an AGM battery with a normal battery?
Generally, no.
If a vehicle was designed to use an AGM battery, particularly a stop-start or European vehicle, replacing it with a conventional flooded battery can result in reduced battery life and poor performance.
The vehicle charging strategy may also be designed around the characteristics of an AGM battery.
Battery Bill recommends replacing AGM with AGM unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies otherwise.
Do hybrid vehicles still use a normal 12V battery?
Yes.
Most hybrid and electric vehicles still use a separate 12V auxiliary battery to power control systems, computers, locks, lighting and other low-voltage equipment.
The 12V battery is separate from the high-voltage traction battery used to drive the vehicle.
Battery Bill supplies replacement auxiliary batteries for many Toyota, Lexus and other hybrid vehicles.
How long should a car battery last?
A typical car battery may last around three to five years, although actual battery life depends heavily on vehicle use, temperature, charging system condition and electrical load.
Vehicles that make frequent short trips, sit unused for long periods or have high electrical demand can experience shorter battery life.
Regular battery and charging-system testing can help identify a weakening battery before it fails completely.
Battery Testing & Installation
Do you install car batteries?
Yes.
Battery Bill provides battery fitting services and can install replacement batteries in a wide range of cars, SUVs, utes and light commercial vehicles.
For Auckland customers, mobile battery replacement is also available at homes, workplaces and other suitable locations.
Do you offer mobile battery replacement in Auckland?
Yes.
Battery Bill provides mobile battery replacement throughout much of Auckland.
Our technicians can come to your home, workplace or roadside location, test the battery and charging system, supply the correct replacement battery and install it where required.
For supported vehicles, we can also perform battery-management resets or battery registration.
Can you replace my battery at work?
Yes.
As long as the vehicle is parked somewhere safe and accessible, Battery Bill can usually replace the battery at your workplace.
This is often easier than taking time away from work to visit a workshop.
Contact us with your vehicle registration and location and we can confirm availability.
Do you test batteries for free?
Yes.
Battery Bill offers free battery testing.
We can test battery condition and check the charging system to help determine whether the battery itself is failing or whether another issue may be contributing to the problem.
Testing before replacing a battery can help avoid unnecessary replacement.
How do I know if my battery is faulty or my alternator is the problem?
A flat battery does not always mean the battery itself is faulty.
Possible causes include a failing battery, charging-system problems, parasitic electrical drain, loose connections or the vehicle simply not being driven enough to fully recharge the battery.
Battery Bill can test both battery condition and charging-system performance to help identify the likely cause.
Can you fit batteries bought online?
Battery Bill offers online ordering for many of our battery ranges.
In Auckland, selected online purchases can include delivery and installation depending on the product and location.
If you are unsure whether fitting is available for your vehicle, contact us before ordering.
European & Stop-Start Vehicles
Does my new battery need to be registered to the vehicle?
Some vehicles require battery registration or a battery-management reset after replacement.
This is common on many European vehicles and modern vehicles with intelligent charging systems.
Battery registration tells the vehicle that a new battery has been installed and may also record its capacity or battery type.
Not every vehicle requires this process, but where it is required Battery Bill can perform it as part of the replacement service.
What is a BMS reset?
A BMS reset updates the vehicle’s Battery Management System after a replacement battery has been installed.
The vehicle may use stored information about battery age, condition and charging requirements when controlling alternator output.
Resetting or registering the replacement battery allows the charging system to manage the new battery correctly.
Do you reset the BMS after replacing a battery?
Yes, where required.
Battery Bill can perform battery registration or BMS resets on many compatible vehicles after fitting the new battery.
This is particularly important on many European and stop-start vehicles.
If you are unsure whether your vehicle requires battery registration, we can check before installation.
Can you replace batteries in BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen vehicles?
Yes.
Battery Bill supplies and fits batteries for many European vehicles including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Land Rover and other European makes.
These vehicles commonly use AGM batteries and may require battery registration or BMS reset after replacement.
We can identify the correct battery specification and complete the required installation procedure where supported.
What happens if I fit the wrong battery to a stop-start vehicle?
Using the wrong battery technology can reduce battery life and may affect stop-start operation.
Vehicles designed for AGM or EFB batteries usually place much higher cycling demands on the battery than conventional vehicles.
A standard flooded battery may not tolerate these operating conditions and can fail prematurely.
For this reason, Battery Bill recommends replacing the original battery with the correct equivalent technology.
Does every stop-start vehicle use an AGM battery?
No.
Some stop-start vehicles use AGM batteries while others use EFB batteries.
The correct technology depends on the vehicle’s charging system and electrical demands.
You should not assume that every stop-start vehicle requires AGM.
Battery Bill can identify the correct battery using the vehicle registration or battery application information.
